Dasavatharam in Trouble!

Posted on 08 May 2008 by tamilworld

Controversy seems to be following Dasavatharam, with just a few more weeks remaining for its release. First it was trouble during audio launch with journalist and media not being given good treatment. Then the rumors related to Jackie Chan, which said that he did not like his Indian visit and Jackie subsequently clearing this in his personal blog. Then the Mallika dress trouble. Now its the turn of Hindu Organisations to protest against the objectionable content in the movie.

The controversy surrounding the release of the much-anticipated film Dasavatharam turned ugly with a Hindu organization filing a petition at the court. According to the complainant, the film consists of scenes that depict the conflict between the Saivites and Vaishnavites. It is also alleged that Dasavatharam contains scenes that disregard the Hindu religion. Furthermore, there are scenes that show the idols of Gods and Goddesses being thrown.

The Madras High Court has ordered notice on a writ petition seeking a direction to the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) to remove scenes which offended the sentiments of Hindus in the Tamil film ‘Dasavatharam’ while issuing the censorship certificate.

The Division Bench comprising of Justices Sathyanarayanan and Rajasuriya has sought an explanation in this regard and ordered to issue notices to producer Oscar Ravichandran, director K.S. Ravikumar and the Censor Board seeking explanation. Meanwhile, Ocsar Ravichandran has issued a statement that there are no such scenes that would hurt the sentiments of Hindus. In fact, the film will play a pivotal role in converting an atheist into a theist, he reassured.

The trailer of the film, telecast on 1 May in Kalaignar TV showed scenes that offended the sentiments of Hindus, particularly Vaishnavites. Vaishnavism preached non-violence, tolerance and humility.

It still remains to be seen if these scenes will be deleted from the movie as the movie has already been issued a clean U certificate by the censor board. The movie has already won the praise of CM Karunanidhi.
